Rising Pune Supergiant v Gujarat Lions

Delhi Daredevils v Rising Pune Supergiant is going to take place on Friday 12th May and Suneer has his preview for the game in place. Have a listen to him here or read excerpts of his insights below.

The Delhi Daredevils get another chance to play party-pooper when they host the Rising Pune Supergiant in the 52nd game of the Indian Premier League…hello there, and welcome to this episode of the World Cricket Chat where I, Suneer Chowdhary, will preview this Indian Premier League game between Delhi and Pune.

First things first and let me put the situation in front of you – obviously subject to change based on what happens in tonight’s match between Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab. Delhi are out of playoffs contention while Pune are all but through to the final four. Why are they not definitely through is because of that lurking threat of the Kings XI Punjab and a win for Punjab against Mumbai will make it slightly tougher for the likes of Kolkata, Pune and Hyderabad. If Punjab lose tonight, Pune will be through too.

That said, Pune will be glad they are the rulers of their own fortunes. They don’t need to worry about the Punjab result – just win at least one of their remaining two games and go through to the playoffs. Win both, including this match against the Daredevils and even have a chance of making the top two and getting another shot at the final.

Speaking of this game now, and Delhi Daredevils have been gone the full nine yards as far as their results are concerned. Last game they chased down 196 against Gujarat Lions after having slumped to 121 for six at one stage. Before that, they had been bowled out for 66 in their chase of 212 against the Mumbai Indians. Gujarat Lions had set them 209 to win in the encounter before that where Rishabh Pant guided them to a win with another 90 and they had also chased down 186 against the Sunrisers Hyderabad after having fallen to 67 all out against Punjab.

The question now is, which Delhi Daredevils team will turn out on Friday? The one where one or two of their batsmen take ownership and everyone else bats around them or the one that caves in like paper tigers. Your guess is as good as mine. But one thing’s for certain, it’s also time that the overseas likes of Corey Anderson and Marlon Samuels take up some ownership with the bat.

Pune have had a good break coming into this game, before which they had won seven out of their previous eight matches. Ben Stokes has led the way for them and in some ways, it looks like he has inspired guys like Jaidev Unadkat to lift their games as well. Unadakat is coming off a five-fer in the previous game, that helped Pune choke the Hyderabad chase away after a Tripathi 93 had guided them to a win over Kolkata.

Captain Smith has scored 367 runs in the competition, but over the last three games he has tallied just 47 which is an indicator that a big one could be around the corner, while MS Dhoni has chipped in with 20s and 30s but one would believe he would want to do a lot more after that brilliant, match-winning knock of 61 against the Sunrisers Hyderabad three weeks ago.

The biggest disappointment, however, for Pune has been Ajinkya Rahane, whose 248 runs at 20.66 and with a strike-rate of less than 120 implies he will want to get some form under his belt going into the playoffs. In short, Pune have three, sort of off-colour batsmen, who have a pedigree to live up to and that’s when they would probably at their most dangerous. Expect at least one of them to come good and that makes Pune an equally dangerous side…

Shruti Chopra believes something on similar lines, and when I spoke to her, this is what she had to say:

“Delhi seem to bat well, but then lose way, their bowling appears to go down the same route – a good start but a poor finish. Keeping this in mind, and the fact that Pune manage to build good bowling and batting partnerships, it’s tarot advantage Rising Pune Supergiant.”

Well, as much as I hope that Delhi wins this and creates some sort of an interest for that fourth spot, subject to Punjab winning both their games, Shruti has spoken and she thinks it’s going to be advantage Pune! So there you have it.
